The Role of Pigment Dispersions in Coating Performance

Well-engineered pigment and additive dispersions influence color strength, gloss and long-term durability.

Pigment and additive dispersions rarely get top billing in a coating formulation, but their quality has an outsized effect on the finished product. Poorly dispersed pigment can mean weaker color strength, uneven gloss, reduced hiding power and coatings that age unevenly in service.

A well-engineered dispersion keeps pigment particles stable and evenly distributed throughout the resin system, which supports consistent color from batch to batch and helps the coating perform the way it was designed to over its service life. This becomes even more important as formulators move toward lower-VOC and waterborne systems, where dispersion stability can be harder to achieve.

Getting dispersions right is as much about process as it is about raw materials — milling, particle size distribution and compatibility with the base resin all play a part. It's an area where close collaboration between a dispersions supplier and a formulator tends to pay off in the finished coating's real-world performance.
