Waterborne vs. Solvent-Borne: Choosing the Right Resin System
· Newell Polymers Technical Team · 1 min read
Each resin platform brings its own trade-offs in performance, application and environmental impact. A look at how to choose.
There is no single right answer to the waterborne-versus-solvent-borne question — the best choice depends on the application, the substrate, and the performance requirements a coating has to meet in service.
Waterborne systems have made significant gains in film performance over the years and are now the default choice for many architectural and consumer applications, where lower odor and easier cleanup are valued alongside environmental considerations. Solvent-borne systems still hold an edge in some industrial and OEM finishing environments, where fast cure times, film build and resistance to harsh conditions are the priority.
Rather than defaulting to one platform, it's worth revisiting the application's real requirements — substrate, cure conditions, regulatory environment and end-use exposure — before settling on a resin system. A formulation partner who can work across both platforms is often better placed to recommend the right fit than one committed to a single chemistry.
